International Migratory Bird Day

I created this drawing while birding on Skinner's Butte (Eugene, OR) during the spring migration. The bird pictured here is a Wilson's Warbler perched in an Indian Plum.

Wilson's Warblers are a medium to long-distance migrant. They spend the non-breeding season south of the United States from Mexico to Panama, but they also winter along the southern coast of California and the Gulf Coast.

Bird Walk I

I stayed out at Fern Ridge Reservoir after the Third Saturday Bird Walk in March and drew this Black-necked Stilt.  While observing this bird, I noticed that, while seemingly still and resting on one leg, I could see that it was slightly moving its head and staying completely tuned in to the flow of life around itself.

Bird Walk II

This image is a pencil drawing I did out at Mount Pisgah during the Fall and created a poster for the Eugene Audubon Society.

Bike-Path Cleanup

I created a woodblock print of a red-winged blackbird that you often see along the bike path in west Eugene. The silhouette creates a bold image for catching your eye and the bird sings out in the direction of the text, as if announcing the event. The event was postponed, hopefully to be rescheduled in the fall.

Music Festival

This school assignment consisted of choosing a well-known event and creating a poster.  After some preliminary sketching, I decided to do a wood-block print to give the event a unique look.

Poetry Slam

The image in this poster is a pencil drawing.  I chose the classic red and black color scheme. The red bar down the left hand side of the poster suggests the spine of a book.

Benefit Party - Agrarian Ales

I created the image of this poster to evoke a sense of an easygoing party where you could show up, enjoy a seasonal brew,  nosh on some tasty food, catch some some live music and relax while contributing to the nonprofit, Hazelwood Outdoor Kindergarten.

Benefit Party - Whirled Pies

I created a drawing of a dandelion plant, cut it out on painted tissue paper and glued it on to a sheet of paper. You see this style in children's books, most notably, Eric Carle. I have wanted to try this artistic process, and I enjoyed making this poster.

Square Dance

The overhead perspective creates a memorable image, and the movement of the dancers carries you back up into the information frame of the event.  I used a black outline to tie all of the elements of the poster together.

Film Poster

I put together this poster for a benefit for Hazelwood Outdoor Kindergarten Scholarship Fund.  I used color to categorize the information of the event.

Park Care Day

This poster was done with colored pencils to make it have a grass-roots feel and relate to all of the children that play there.  Through the surrounding neighborhood's efforts of volunteering, they have been able to maintain the park and keep it pesticide-free.  Thank you.

Protecting Wildlife

I did the illustration in colored pencil.  I placed the magnifying glass on the poster and had an owl perch on it to have fun with perspective and to highlight the purpose of the project.

Jazz Jam

I created a pencil drawing and accompanied with a magenta background to evoke energy and then reversed out the typography as if it had been turned on like a light.

Figure Drawing

I created this poster during Typography I. The assignment was to find a flier on campus and recreate it.  I choose to do a simple wood-block print of a figure to evoke a sense timelessness.  Figure drawing has been a core discipline in developing as an artist for millenniums.

Open Mic

This poster developed from some sketches of an idea I had for the music festival project above. I like the soft feel of how the drawing came out.

Socks

I did this drawing over the winter while my socks were hanging on a little indoor clothes line.  While recently marvelling over the engineering of a clothes pin, I decided to dig out this drawing and make a poster.  The green stripes are reminiscent of the striped socks I used to wear as a kid.  Yep, those were the days.
